I had always wanted to have kids and so did Maggie, so we decided early on to try and start a family. We were both building careers. We wanted a child but we didn’t want more than one, mainly because we valued our freedom, and because a large family felt like too much for us. So, four months after we were married, as Maggie put it, “we” were pregnant.

We lived near the French Quarter, upstairs in an old boarding house that had been converted into a two-bedroom apartment. We had the great fortune and misfortune of having a French bakery located directly below us. I say misfortune because bakers work all night and they are a noisy lot, but if you like the smell of bread baking and fresh pastry every morning for breakfast, well, then, it was quite fortunate for us indeed.

With a baby coming, all I could do was try not to panic, so I just worked harder because I believed we needed more money. Maggie thought this was very annoying, but she just didn’t understand.

Men are hard-wired to work, especially so when a baby is coming. Maggie just wanted me around her more, but clearly there would be plenty of time for that later.

Needless to say, we fought over this.
