Chapter 10

Life settled back into our old routines.

Maggie and I were busy with Layla and our careers. We were having so much fun watching Layla grow. It was amazing that she was almost nine months old now. “Mama’s volunteers” were there performing their daily babysitting duties. They were always pleasant and kind, and very attentive to Layla. Maggie and I had discussed cutting back on work and spending more time with Layla during the weekdays, but Layla was thriving and happy so we decided to just let things be. Mama dropped by occasionally, but we saw her less. Things had settled into a nice, easy rhythm.

Our weekends were “Layla time,” and we had started taking her on short day trips in the car. We were especially looking forward to our trip coming up this weekend. We were going to drive through the Louisiana Delta and down to the coast. A friend of mine at the law firm had an old farmhouse down there in the country and his generous offer to let us stay the weekend was going to be our first overnight trip with Layla.
