“How sweet that you remembered our first date!” Maggie said as she unbuttoned my shirt.
Grinning, I decided to keep the rest of the story to myself.
Luckily we still had about 45 minutes until Mama and Myra were to arrive.
* * *
Mama and her cousin Myra arrived exactly at 10:00am, and as Maggie went to the door to greet them she shot me one of those “be nice” looks. I smiled and said,
“I will!”
Maggie laughed as she opened the door.
Mama was her usual cheerful self and as she introduced Myra, her cousin, she said, “Bonjour, Mr. Jim, come give Mama a big hug!”
Mama loved to hug everyone so I was expecting this, but then I got an unexpected hug from Myra. “Hello, Mr. Jim!” Myra said as she embraced me.
Must run in the family, I thought.
The women bustled off into the kitchen leaving me standing in the living room. I could hear their excited chatter about this and that, and I sensed that all I really needed to do this morning was to just be there.
I was okay with that, and secretly I hoped that this whole baby-catching thing was just a figment of Maggie’s rather active imagination.
