Maggie and I slowly turned our heads towards each other and made eye contact. We both smiled and Maggie said, “That Mama, you never know what she’s going to do!”

Charles laughed and said, “You got dat right, yes ma’am, you surely do!”

And, like a lightening bolt, Charles sped us across town, missing every red light along the way.

Pulling up at the emergency room entrance, Charles said, “Now just you wait. My nephew Jonathan, he’s going be here with a wheelchair in just one minute.”

And sure enough, Jonathan appeared just like clockwork. Right on cue, he opened the door on Maggie’s side and said, “Well, hello, you must be Maggie. I’m Dr. Todd, the ER doc on duty today, and Dr. Henderson is expecting you on the third floor.”

Charles chuckled and said, “Now, Johnny, you tell that Dr. Henderson that Mama’s got her eye on him!”

Dr. Todd laughed and said, “Oh, don’t you worry, Uncle Charles. Maggie is in good hands with Dr. Henderson.”

Getting out of the cab, I reached for my billfold to pay Charles and he said,
“I ain’t takin’ no money for this ride, son. Good luck with the baby. I’m sure she’s gonna be fine.”
