“That sounds great, honey. Why don’t you get one of those baked chickens and a salad? Bring me a box of Oreos. It’s been one of those days. I’m going to call Mama while you’re out and tell her what Dr. Henderson said. I hope you don’t mind, Jim, but it’s getting late and I want to check in with Mama before we eat dinner. Does that sound okay with you?”

“Sure,” I said. “I’ll be back in about 30 minutes.”

I heard Maggie dialing Mama before I got out the front door.

I’m not that great in the grocery store. I have a hard time walking out with what I came in for, but it wasn’t long before I made it back to the apartment with our dinner in hand.

Maggie was still on the phone, sitting in the living room, and she made a face at me like “why all the groceries?” and I said, “I know, I know!”

I walked into the kitchen to make dinner as Maggie finished up her talk with Mama. I heard her hang up the phone just as I rounded the corner with a tray of food for Maggie.
