Maggie abruptly scooted her chair back from the table and said, “I’m calling her right now!”

Maggie called Mama at home. It was around 8:30am and since the flower shop didn’t open until 9am there was a pretty good chance we’d catch Mama before she left for work. As the phone was ringing, Maggie put the phone on speaker.

After about four rings, Mama’s familiar, heavy Cajun accent broke the silence in our apartment with a cheerful, “Hello, Bonjour!”

“Mama, it’s Maggie and I’ve got you on the speaker, so Jim is here too!”

“Oh, for goodness sake, it’s so nice to hear from you! How is everyone this morning? And my little angel, how is that beautiful child?” Mama said.

Glancing over at me with a smile, Maggie said, “Well, that’s what we are calling about. A lot has happened since we last talked, Mama, and Jim and I are wanting to come to the shop with Layla. Would that be okay?”

“Well, of course it is, child. Come over anytime. I got some fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies just waitin’ for y’all,” Mama said.
