We had talked a lot about her grandma Marie. I knew the story about Maggie’s parents dying when she was a baby and, even though I had never met Marie, I felt like I knew her. She was the only family
Maggie had ever known. Until now, Maggie was mostly alone, but with me and soon Layla, Maggie was finally creating a family of her own. This was such a big moment in her life, and I was feeling sad for Maggie and more than a little annoyed at Mama Vermillion for dropping this bomb on us.
“Honey, I don’t know why this is happening. You’ve been seeing Mama for months now. Are you sure you didn’t
talk to her about the baby’s name?
“No, I’ve been wanting to surprise you and share this with you first,” she said, her voice a bit muffled with her face buried in my flannel shirt.
“Well, I’m sure Mama will have something to say about this tomorrow. Maybe then it will all make sense.”
