Rummaging through our limited CD collection didn’t help much, so I had just about given up when it dawned on me that I better make sure the player still worked. It took me a few minutes to get everything arranged on the dresser with the speakers in the right place and so on, and after plugging in the player I noticed the indicator read “playing.” Realizing a CD was left loaded inside, I turned up the volume. I immediately recognized the music. It was the John Williams soundtrack from the movie “Out of Africa.” Perfect!

Our first date was going to see that film and we both loved that soundtrack. How lucky was that, I thought, as Maggie burst into the apartment carrying a bag full of croissants.

“Bonjour, mon ami!” she announced in her horrible but hilarious fake French accent.

Ejecting the CD because I wanted to surprise her, I said, “Hey, babe, I think I found the perfect music!”

I could hear Maggie in the kitchen making more coffee, so I left the bedroom and walked into the kitchen, realizing she hadn’t heard me.

“Hey, what took you so long down there in the bakery? Getting another French lesson?” I said teasingly.
