Waving goodbye, he put the truck in gear and as he drove off Maggie yelled out, “Be careful, Sam!”
Our walk into town was pleasant and it was great to see the countryside from this pace. I’ve always liked to walk and it was a great day for it. It was especially fun to wave to the occasional passerby on the road. Everyone was driving trucks and driving slow and everyone waved. Most of the people in the Delta made a living farming or fishing the Gulf. Families had been down here living like this pretty much unchanged for hundreds of years.
We finally made our way into town and, after strolling through a few antique stores and small art galleries, we decided it was time to grab some lunch. Strider was being a good boy, always waiting for us outside the door, and Sam was right, everybody knew him.
We asked around about the best lunch place and discovered there was really only one that kept coming up. It was an old diner called Alma’s Diner near the center of town on the old square. The word was that Alma was a scratch cook and that you had to try the best lemon meringue pie in Louisiana, so I was definitely up for that.
