We made our way to the square and it wasn’t long before we had seated ourselves at a corner booth near the window at Alma’s Diner. Almost instantly we noticed lumbering towards us a giant black man in his late seventies, announcing, “Hello folks, welcome to Alma’s!”

He was bringing us a baby seat and as he approached he jutted out a massive hand that engulfed mine. As he shook it he said, “What can Alma get for you today?”

Maggie laughed and said, “Oh sorry, I thought…”

Alma interrupted her and said, “I know, child, I know. My mama, she wanted a girl!”

We all laughed and settled in as Alma handed us menus.

I knew I couldn’t go wrong with the fried chicken plate, and Maggie went for the grilled halibut.

We ordered mashed potatoes and salads, corn on the cob, the works!

Oh yes, and lemon meringue pie and coffee for dessert.

Everything lived up to our expectations and more—and the pie, well, yes, it was the best lemon meringue pie I’d ever had.
