Dr. Henderson replied, “By around eight months, there’s not much room left in the uterus and most babies maximize their cramped quarters by settling in head down, in what’s known as a cephalic presentation. But your baby has turned the other way. She is in a breech position. That means she’s now poised to come out buttocks or feet first.
“Typically in this situation we always recommend a C-section because your baby is in an abnormal position. A C-section might be the safest way to deliver the baby.”
“Excuse me, but does this means a hospital birth and surgery, Dr. Henderson?” I asked.
“Yes, I’m sorry. I know you’re really wanting a home birth, but this is my recommendation at this time. It is rare at this stage in pregnancy for the baby to reposition itself. It has happened but it is very rare. I suggest you schedule your surgery as soon as possible.
“Let’s see, you’re at about 37 weeks now, Maggie, is that right?”
“Yes, exactly 37 weeks,” Maggie solemnly said.
“Okay, I’d like to see you next week to confirm the surgery date, so please make an appointment as soon as you can. And I’m very sorry about the home birth.” With that, Dr. Henderson left the room.
