So, finding a nice spot, we put Layla on a little blanket that Maggie had brought and we began to pick the wild grapes. We glanced back at Layla now and then and it looked like she was having the time of her life, and Maggie and I were having such a wonderful time too.
I had a hatful of wild grapes and, as I turned to walk back to Layla, I noticed she had disappeared. Maggie was at the other end of the trellis and out of my line of sight, so I just assumed that she had come back for Layla. When I set my hatful of grapes on the blanket, I called out to them, “Hey, where are you guys?”
Maggie immediately replied, “I was just about to ask you the same thing!” As she emerged from her end of the trellis with her hat loaded with grapes, we suddenly realized that Layla had vanished!
A little panicked, Maggie dropped her grapes on the ground and yelled out, “Layla, where are you!” She instinctively ran towards the path where we had just walked, and I followed.
