Sam followed us back to the trellis and our blanket and grapes, and as we arrived at the old vineyard he said, “You’re lucky you didn’t agitate those hornets. They’ve got a big nest up there!”
As I looked up into an old plum tree that was overhanging the trellis, I saw the biggest hornet’s nest I’d ever seen. “Wow!” I said.
Sam replied, “This type of hornet is very aggressive. I get stung every time I come anywhere near here. Sorry I forgot to warn you. That nest is too high up in the tree for me to spray, so I just steer clear of here!”
I looked at Maggie. She just winked at me and then said, “Oh, that’s okay, Sam. We’re so sorry about all the commotion. Until just now we didn’t know that Layla could even crawl!”
And with perfect timing Layla made her “doggie” sound and we all laughed when Maggie said, “Layla just said ‘doggie!’”
