We moved off the bed and as we stood by Sam he reached out and grabbed Maggie’s hand. As he did, with Maggie still holding Layla, he said with tears in his eyes, “There’s that beautiful child. I got to tell you what she did!”
There was a very deep silence in the room.
Sam began his story. “I was up on the ladder, just about to spray those damn hornets, when I slipped and fell. I must have fell at least eight feet, but my fall spooked the hornets, and while I lay there stunned by the fall they came at me. The hornets just kept hittin’ me, wave after wave, and I couldn’t move. I don’t know how long I was down, but everything went black and the next thing I remember I was going down a tunnel real fast towards a light. As I got to the light, my wife Mable, who passed ten years ago, she was there and we was huggin’ and cryin’ and my mom and pappy was there, and then I thought I must have died. I remembered the hornets and then all of a sudden Mable said that it wasn’t my time to pass, that an angel was sent to save me!
