Having a “special” child was a very daunting thing, and I knew we were just getting started in the process with Layla. Needless to say, as we entered Mama’s shop, I was grateful to hear the old bell ring above the door, announcing our arrival.
In just a few seconds Mama appeared from the back of the store. Arms outstretched, she made a beeline for Layla, saying, “Bonjour, mon enfant belle! Comment vas-tu?”
By my very poor French, I think she said good morning and how is my beautiful child.
Mama lifted Layla out of her stroller and held her for the longest time, rocking gently back and forth. You could feel the love between them, it was really kind of stunning. Layla’s arms were wrapped around Mama’s neck, and it was almost like they were in a trance.
“Oh, it is so good to see you, Mama!” Maggie said. “We have so much to share with you!”
Mama turned her head towards Maggie and smiled and said, “I know, child, I know. Let’s all go to the back of the store and sit down for some tea and cookies. I brought Tonya, my niece, to run the store this morning. Y’all sit down and get comfortable while Mama makes us some of her special tea!”
