As Dr. Henderson applied the sonogram wand and started the scan, he said, “Okay, Maggie just lie still and let’s see what’s going on here.”

I could see the monitor over Dr. Henderson’s shoulder and as soon as the wand passed over Layla she went nuts, moving back and forth. I could sense she didn’t like this at all.

“Why is she moving like that, Dr. Henderson?” I asked.

“Some babies get a little agitated by the sound. It’s my theory, but some fetuses are more sensitive to these tests than others.”

Thinking to myself that Layla was one of those sensitive ones for sure, Dr. Henderson stopped the test. As Nurse Blake cleaned the gel off of Maggie, Dr. Henderson said, “Ms. Blake, as soon as you’re finished will you go to the computer and make sure my office gets the e-file on this?”

“Yes, Dr. Henderson, I’ll see to it right away.” And with that she excused herself from the exam room.

After a bit of an awkward silence, Maggie said, “What is going on? Is everything okay?”
