After playing with Layla and Buddy for a few minutes, Layla rejoined her friends.
As I was leaving, I glanced back and noticed all the kids were sitting in a circle under the giant pecan tree. Buddy was in the middle of the circle chewing on a stick.
I hugged Mama as I left the porch and thanked her for the generous offer about the house, and as I was walking down the front porch steps she said, “This old house has got good bones, Mr. Jim, but it sure could use the love of more family here. Just bring Maggie over and then y’all let me know what feels best for you.”
She smiled and waved as I turned and walked briskly back to the office. As soon as I got to my desk I called Maggie.
The shift nurse at the nurses’ station answered the phone and told me Maggie was on rounds with one of the doctors and that she’d call me back. So I decided to call the realtor and run the idea by her. Her name was Nancy, and on the second ring she picked up the phone.
“Hey, Nancy, this is Jim!”
