“Let’s go see Dr. Henderson this week,” Maggie said.

“Okay, and I’m sure Mama will say yes to being our midwife,” I said.

“Oh yes,” Maggie said, “she’s already mentioned it.”

“Figures.”

Maggie giggled. “Assume the position.”

I laughed and said, “But I need to get up and blow out the candles.”

Maggie sighed. “Don’t worry about the candles, baby. This light is so romantic and I’m too warm to let you out of the bed. Besides the candles are sitting on plates. What’s going to catch on fire?”

“Okay, if the apartment burns down, it’s your fault.”

“Don’t worry your pretty little head.”

“My pretty little head?”

Maggie was already asleep and I was smiling about how totally impractical she was about almost everything, and that was one of the very reasons I loved her. I drifted off to sleep wondering how in the hell I was going to handle a home birth.

Oh well, another adventure.
