Maggie smiled and said, “No one but you could ever say that to me and live to tell about it!”

Knowing how true that was, I smiled and went back to my puttering in the baby’s room. I was just about done applying the finishing touches. My last task was installing this little mobile on the crib. It was a bunch of pink and blue and yellow fish that bob around when they’re touched. Maggie had picked it out and had been asking me every day for a week if I’d install it. So, that done, I announced, “The Baby’s Room is now officially complete and ready for baby!”

Maggie replied in a haughty British aristocratic tone, “Oh, thank you, dear James!”

Our mood was relaxed and playful as we were both looking forward to Maggie’s famous vegetable soup and sourdough bread.

“Jim, will you help me set the table?”

“Sure, hon!” I said as I rounded the corner into the kitchen.

We hurriedly got dinner on the table. We hadn’t eaten much all day and, as the soup and hot bread and butter and a beet salad was served, I said, “I can’t remember being this hungry!”
